Procedures have been developed for routine 40Ar/39Ar and (U-Th)/He analysis.  We alternate between the two types of measurements throughout the year.


Incremental heating of metal encapsulated samples to produce age spectra is totally automated and acheived using a diode laser

Laser fusion is totally automated and is performed with a 10W CO2 laser.  Single crystals (typically 300-600 µm in diameter) are placed in individual 1 mm diameter wells within a 11 row x 11 column tray.


Samples of zircon, monazite, rutile, or apatite may be incrementally heated for (U-Th)/He thermochronology.

Degassing of apatite and zircon single crystals is fully automated.  Heating of samples encapsulated in flattened 1 mm Nb tubes occurs with a diode laser.
